Alfred is a big dumb baby

In retrospect, offering to reshingle the roof himself probably wasn't the best idea. It had seemed like one at the time, though. Alfred had no fear of heights, and even if he didn't have any experience in roof repair, he'd fixed other stuff before, and how hard could it be?

Hard, apparently. Not so much the repair work itself, but the ground. After a long winter that had just barely started to thaw, the ground was really hard.

Assuming the clattering sound was the result of her brother-in-law dropping his tool box -- again -- Katya gives herself the indulgence of a few more seconds in order to finish drying a dish before setting it on a rack and peering through the kitchen window. "Alfred?" she calls, her voice threaded with a familiar sense of concern. "Is everything okay?"

"Uh, yeah," Alfred calls back from the yard, although the audible wince in his voice is hardly convincing. "No, yeah, I'm all right." He starts to pick himself up off the ground, only to collapse again when he attempts to put weight on his arm. Yeah, that's broken. Nevertheless, it doesn't stop him from shouting reassurance at he kitchen window. "Just... just gimme a second, I'm good."
