Captain's log, Stardate 1863.1. Our probes are picking up signs of sexy life on this new planet. I'm going to beam down and check it out.

[America looks up from his wristwatch and gives Canada a wink.]

Pretty cool, huh?

A) Charms Class

[Every professor's least favourite student-- the one who refuses to listen to the lesson because he's known about magic all his life, thanks, he doesn't need to be lectured on wingardium leviosa, that's baby stuff. And maybe he's good enough to impress some of his classmates-- or to send paper airplanes into their hair-- but his cockiness and lack of technique are going to get something blown up if he isn't careful.]

B) Staircases

[How can you tell you're passing a Gryffindor in the halls? Don't worry, they'll let you know. I'm sorry, did this kid just bump into you? Yes. Does he care at all? No. Laterz.]

C) Great Hall

[You'd think no one had ever taught him any table manners with the way he reaches indiscriminately over dishes and past people's faces, grabbing seconds and thirds before he's even really finished his firsts. It's really no wonder no one seems to want to sit with him.]

D) Other

[Other.]

Amelia liked Starbucks. The smell, the taste, the sights-- she could almost always walk into a given Starbucks and, within half an hour, find a cute boy to buy her a frappucino. And the type of boy tended to be much less skeezy than the ones you'd find at bars that she couldn't get into anyway.

Today she sat nibbling on a biscotti, wings tucked carefully behind her back, glancing up whenever she beat her level of Candy Crush to scope out the prospectives.

To say it hadn't been an adjustment, leaving the school, moving to Canada, shacking up with Maddie and Kaito-- well, that would have been a big fat lie. But she was adjusting. She and Kaito were even... well, they weren't exactly getting along, but they hadn't killed each other yet and that was a start. It wasn't a bad arrangement, all things considered.

She waltzed into Maddie's room without knocking (the door was open!) and plopped herself down on the bed, bouncing up and down on the mattress. "So, what was it you needed my help with, Mads?"

[Welcome students young and old, faculty, friends and family. In celebration of the defeat of He Who Must Not Be Named, Hogwarts has opened its doors to all who have passed through its hallways-- as well as those who have yet to do so. Current and former students, faculty, and the families thereof are all welcome to join us in our celebratory feast.]

In retrospect, offering to reshingle the roof himself probably wasn't the best idea. It had seemed like one at the time, though. Alfred had no fear of heights, and even if he didn't have any experience in roof repair, he'd fixed other stuff before, and how hard could it be?

Hard, apparently. Not so much the repair work itself, but the ground. After a long winter that had just barely started to thaw, the ground was really hard.

Back at the Institute, and Amelia was exhausted. The kidnapped girls and those who'd gone after them dispersed like lost souls to their respective dorms, and Amelia headed down the hallway. Her dorm was on the second floor, but she could barely find it in herself to lift her feet more than a shuffle, much less climb stairs right now. But more importantly, there was someone she needed to see.

Slipping into Maddie's room without a word, Amelia made a beeline to the other girl's bed, lifting a corner of the comforter and burrowing herself in. She smells, Maddie, but she's home and safe, and isn't that what matters?

[Stephanie is reading. On a chair, by herself, in the corner. She's also wearing a cozy and oversized hand-knit sweater her Auntie made for her, because Canada is stupid and cold. Her cat is sitting on her lap, pulling out stitches with her contented(?) kneading.

Do not disturb.]

I've been doing a bit of extra research on the X-gene lately, trying to see if I could find anything that would help mutant relations in the general population. Perhaps if it was better understood why people become carriers of the gene, we could both detect mutation potential before an individual's power manifested-- perhaps even before birth-- and therefore be better prepared to deal with young mutants, decreasing the rate at which their emerging powers do harm themselves or others.

I'm sure most of you know that while Homo sapiens superior first appeared as early as 14,000 BC, the number of mutants has increased exponentially since the mid-20th century. Many theorize that this is due to a rise of nuclear technology-- I would venture to say that improved living conditions and availability of resources could contribute to a larger number of mutants manifesting their powers when previously they may never have discovered them.

It's clear that the X-gene is not simple Mendelian inheritance; while it's much more likely that two mutant parents will produce mutant offspring, it isn't strictly guaranteed. Additionally, it's been noted that a pairing of two mutants is less likely to produce offspring than a mutant and a non-mutant, and significantly less than the general population. This would suggest that the X-gene may have an effect on gamete production or viability.

Even so, without being able to detect those who are carriers of the X-gene who may not be mutants themselves (or if their mutation doesn't manifest), any research we do would ultimately be incomplete.

Alfred plopped the last of the boxes down on the growing pile in the foyer of the new apartment and slid down next to them, wiping the sweat off his brow with the back of his arm. "Phew," he says, and grins up at Eliza. "That's the last of 'em. I never realized we'd end up having so much stuff." He reaches his arm out, as if to have her help him up, but at the last moment he tugs her down into his lap, trapping her in a playful hug. "Welcome home!"

The first day back was always somewhat of a nightmare. Everyone lugging around their belongings, students trying to reunite with friends they hadn't seen all summer, professors trying to keep everything organized and make sure no one's powers went drastically haywire. One year someone had blown up the entire second floor bathroom in the girls' wing, and everyone had had to spend their first week back running up and down stairs with towels wrapped around and watching out for sneaking boys.

There hadn't been any disasters today, or at least that Amelia had noticed, but it still took her most of the afternoon to get herself unpacked and settled, including a few minor squabbles with her roommate about who deserved more shelf space and who got the desk next to the fridge, and with everyone else being just as busy, she hadn't gotten a lot of time to socialize.

She waited until the sun went down before slipping out the window (buying her roommate's silence with a few quality candy bars) and slipping across the courtyard to the room she knew belonged to Maddie.

Amelia sprawled across the couch, one arm draped melodramatically across her face, the other dangling listlessly off the edge. She'd already discarded everything but her bra and underwear, bare pink belly rising like a mountain above her supine form. But it was still too hot. She felt like a half-ton pig, roasting on a spit, only minus even the perk of having an apple in her mouth.

"Aaaaaalfreeeeeed," she called out, voice rising into a whine. "Ice creeeeaaaam."
